Summer may be over, but that doesn’t mean days out are no longer an option.
If you live in or near Surrey, there are plenty of fabulous things to see and do during the autumn.
Whether you’re planning solo trips or family adventures, read on to discover five of our favourite things to see and do in the local area.
1. Enjoy the colourful foliage at the Winkworth Arboretum
While you might not be fond of shorter, cooler days, autumn also brings spectacular leaf colours that transform local green spaces into stunning scenes of red, orange, and gold.
It’s the perfect time to take a stroll and enjoy the benefits of being in nature. Fortunately, Surrey offers a wide choice of parks, nature reserves, and gardens.
The National Trust-owned Winkworth Arboretum is a fantastic choice for an autumn day out kicking up leaves. This vibrant woodland covers around 45 hectares near Godalming, and it looks spectacular this time of year.
There’s also a calendar of seasonal activities, including an autumn colour photography session and a Squirrels Who Squabbled family trail.
2. Walk or cycle through the Surrey Hills
The Surrey Hills was one of the first landscapes in the country to be designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in 1958. It’s since been renamed the Surrey Hills National Landscape to reflect its importance to the country’s wellbeing and environment.
If you fancy an active day out, you won’t be short of options in this beautiful setting.
There are numerous walking and cycling trails to explore. Some of the most popular include the challenging climbs up Box Hill and Leith Hill, which offer panoramic views. For a gentler option or for those with mobility issues, there are a few “easier access” routes, such as the 900-metre Newlands Corner Acorn Trail and the 1-mile Devil’s Punch Bowl Sailor’s Stroll.
There are also regular events throughout the autumn, such as willow weaving workshops, wellbeing walks, and forest bathing.
3. Visit Guildford Cathedral
Autumn is renowned for increased rainfall in the UK. Happily, there are lots of wonderful indoor places to visit in Surrey if the weather isn’t favourable.
Guildford Cathedral has a lot to offer people of all ages.
You might like to book a guided tour to learn about the history and architecture of this Grade II listed building. If you’re feeling energetic, climb the 249 steps to the top of the tower to enjoy stunning views over Surrey and the surrounding area.
If you’re visiting with your children or grandchildren, there are “explorer bags” aimed at different ages to keep little ones entertained.
Alternatively, wander around and enjoy the tranquillity of this beautiful space, or attend one of the services that are held on most days.
The cathedral also has a shop stocked with souvenirs and a café that serves hot and cold dishes all year round.
4. Take an indoor or outdoor tour of Denbies wine estate
This is the perfect day out for autumn’s changeable weather, as there are both open-air and covered options.
Denbies wine estate in Dorking is one of England’s largest single estate vineyards. It comprises 380 acres and has a production capacity of 1 million bottles.
Choose from indoor wine tasting winery tours or outdoor vineyard train tours. You can also reserve a table for lunch in the gallery or vineyard restaurants.
Alternatively, pick a special event, such as “brunch and bubbles in the wine library” or “sip & sketch” if you’re feeling creative.
5. Explore the local events calendar
Visit Surrey lists all the events taking place locally during the autumn.
Some of the most popular include:
- The annual Guildford Walkfest – This festival features at least one countryside walk every day in September.
- Guildford Book Festival – Taking place in October, this annual event attracts successful writers from all genres. The 2025 line-up includes Kate Mosse, Raymond Blanc, and Jeremy Hunt, to name a few.
- Halloween activities – Choose from haunted tours, pumpkin picking, ghost walks, silent discos, children’s crafting, theatrical performances, and more.
- Bonfire night celebrations – Surrey is home to several spectacular bonfire events and fireworks displays, including Bramley Bonfire and Fireworks, Godalming Town Fireworks, and Guildford Firework Fiesta.
