With the school holidays just around the corner, you might be wondering how to keep your children or grandchildren entertained throughout the summer.
Thankfully, there are plenty of fun locations to explore in the UK.
Read on to discover four family-friendly places to visit for a day trip or a longer stay.
1. London for its host of attractions
The capital city is a must-visit location for children and adults of all ages.
Young children will love exploring the Sea Life London Aquarium on Southbank. Watch them marvel at the marine life as you walk under the sea in the glass Ocean Tunnel or help them spot a croc in the rainforest adventure.
Other attractions for little ones include the Cutty Sark, the Science Museum, Shrek’s Adventure! and the Paddington Bear experience.
For teenagers, Madame Tussauds wax museum, a London by Night bus tour, and a climb Up at the O2 are great choices.
If you’re planning to pack all that in, a Go City pass is a great investment that offers up to 50% off London attractions for up to 30 days, depending on which pass you choose.
In the summer, the city comes alive with pop-up events and festivals, especially on the Southbank.
2. The Peak District for outdoor adventures
This beautiful national park is conveniently located in the centre of the UK, between Manchester, Sheffield, and Derby.
Whether you’re looking for family walks, scenic bike rides, or friendly campsites, the Peak District has it all.
Peak District Kids has a handy walks search tool for finding the perfect route for your family. It also recommends the Mosal Trail for young cyclists as it’s traffic-free and relatively flat.
For older or more adventurous children (and adults) there are plenty of outdoor activities to try, including rock climbing and wild swimming. Or test your head for heights by taking a ride on the Heights of Abraham cable car, located just outside the national park in Matlock Bath. This attraction closes for the winter, so summer is the time to go!
3. Cornwall for a seaside holiday
This charming county in the south-west of England is known for its mild and sunny climate.
So, if you want to introduce your children or grandchildren to the joys of a British seaside holiday, Cornwall is a fantastic choice.
There’s an array of stunning beaches, including Kynance Cove on the Lizard Peninsula and Porthcurno Beach. Sennen Cove and Gyllyngvase Beach are known for their calm waters, making them a good option for young or inexperienced swimmers.
If you fancy mixing beach days with other activities, consider the Eden Project and Newquay Zoo for fun days out. Or book a guided seal safari by boat to see these beautiful creatures in their natural habitat.
For history enthusiasts, there are some notable castles and ruins to visit, such as St Michael’s Mount, Pendennis Castle, and Tintagel Castle.
4. York for a historical and educational getaway
Located in the north of England, York is a fantastic destination for a UK family city break.
It has plenty of historical sites and educational attractions to keep both children and adults entertained on a day trip or a short break.
The National Railway Museum houses around 100 iconic locomotives, including the Mallard – the world’s fastest steam train. There are several interactive exhibits to explore, including a virtual reality experience showcasing the greatest moments in the Flying Scotsman’s history.
Continuing your immersive journey back in time, head to the JORVIK Viking Centre where you’ll be transported back to AD 960 when York was a thriving Viking city.
Finally, not to be missed, is the York Dungeon, where live actors will tell the story of the city’s dark history. This one might be a little scary for children under eight – or adults of a nervous disposition!
